DANCER tells the incredible story of Sergei Polunin, who has not only been hailed as the most naturally gifted male ballet dancer of his generation (The Observer), but also the James Dean of the ballet world (Daily Telegraph) because of his bad boy antics. Blessed with astonishing power and poise, Polunin took the dance world by storm and became the London Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal at the age of 21. But at the peak of his success, aged 25, he walked away, driven to the brink of self-destruction by stardom – his talent more a burden than a gift.
The documentary DANCER offers an unprecedented behind the scenes look into the life of this complex young man, whose captivating performance to Hozier’s “Take Me to Church“ directed by David LaChappelle, made ballet go viral, and has been viewed over 15 million times to date. Urban rebel, iconoclast, airborne angel, Sergei has transformed the shape of ballet. But virtuosity comes with a high price. How can you be free to be yourself when you are ballet’s hottest property?
The feature length documentary is directed by Academy Award nominee Steven Cantor (loudQUIETloud: A Film About the Pixies), and is produced by Academy Award nominee Gabrielle Tana (Philomena).
