Love, Simon is a modern day teen love story. All the elements are in place, life is grand, except that the main character is gay and not yet out to anyone. For seventeen-year old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) his coming of age is as confusing as any teenager, and while knowing inside that he has feelings for  he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.

Director Greg Berlanti, who also directed the teen hit, Dawson’s Creek, recalled how he had to fight to have a same-sex romantic kiss between two gay characters on that show, which ended up being a first for television. He’s now happily married to retired L.A. Galaxy soccer player Robbie Rogers, and looks like he might have a feature film hit under his belt now as well.

The movie seems to be triggering a lot of emotions, and not just with audiences. Joey Pollari, who plays Lyle in the film, recently came out in an interview with the Advocate, and, Keiynan Lonsdale, who plays Abraham Greenfeld, came out to the cast and crew at the wrap party. As well, Robinson’s brother also came out during the filming of the movie. It’s remarkably endearing to have those so closely involved with the film to be actually experiencing in real life what the main character does in the film.

The movie soundtrack is quite good as well, and features out musician Troye Sivan, with a track titled “Strawberries & Cigarettes.” Other contributors to the soundtrack include KhalidBleachersThe 1975 and more.
