The series Netflix’s Tales of the City is a new and original chapter in the beloved and ground breaking Tales franchise of novels and TV miniseries. The series reestablishes characters that fans know and love, while also introducing a new set of characters, storylines and LGBTQ characters a new generation will relate to. Audiences will love and can appreciate The series acts as its own standalone series without having watched the original iterations. It is inspired by the novels by Armistead Maupin and the previous miniseries, but it is not based on a previously published book.

Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career.  Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.  

Tales of the City has a history of groundbreaking representation of authentic LGBTQ voices in print and on television. It continues this legacy for Netflix’s 2019 global audience via new queer characters and modern stories that are relatable and fresh. In today’s climate, where many continue to fight for visibility and are often marginalized, Tales is a safe space everyone could use. Through the colorful characters and storylines highlighting themes of acceptance, friendship and home, Tales of the City is about the value of a chosen family who fully embraces you just as you are.

Tales centers on LGBTQ characters and stories in ways rarely seen on television, with a commitment to inclusivity clear through the array of queer storytellers in front of, and behind the camera. The all LGBTQ writers room includes Andy Parker, Patricia Resnick, Marcus Gardley, Jen Silverman, Hansol Jung and Thomas Page McBee.

Lauren Morelli serves as Showrunner and Executive Producer, alongside Executive Producer/Director Alan Poul, and Executive Producers Armistead Maupin and Laura Linney. Working Title’s Andrew Stearn, Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner executive produce. 

Tales of the City debuts on Netflix June 7, 2019 worldwide.
