New York indie-rock artist America Jayne‘s upcoming single My Boyfriend’s Roommate’s Girlfriend is the first single to directly address her journey of accepting her own identity as a pansexual cis woman. She has three previously released songs with more to come, but hasn’t mentioned anything about releasing a full album as yet.

“My Boyfriend’s Roommate’s Girlfriend is a song for the queer community. I want to normalize the scary, confusing, and sometimes infuriating journey of discovering your sexuality. It’s OK to be confused. It’s OK to question yourself. But most importantly, it’s OK to be yourself. However unique that may be. Your sexual journey is entirely your own.”

“‘My Boyfriend’s Roommate’s Girlfriend'” was written at a time when I was extremely confused about my own sexuality. I was constantly second guessing my own attractions. When I looked in the mirror I didn’t recognize who I was anymore. Instead of seeing growth, confidence, and self-love in my sexual identity I was questioning every choice I made. This song was born through accepting, and beginning to own this confusion as opposed to fighting it. I have struggled with my own sexuality since I was a kid. I think I always knew I was attracted to all genders, but I was terrified of pursuing my true identity. The song is based on a time when I was dating a man, but I kept finding myself feeling like I hadn’t had the opportunity to really explore, love, and appreciate my sexuality. I developed school-girl-like crushes on every girl I met. While they were all just total fantasy, my innocent crushes made me realize that repressing my sexuality was not something I could do anymore.”
