This is the weekend Nuit Blanche should be happening in Toronto, but unfortunately it’s been postponed until next year. However, there’s a new public art display happening in the city this weekend only.

CONTINUUM is a Global Movement curated by world known DJ/Producer Steve Aoki, created by Toronto based artist Krista Kim , with music by Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder. It is the first digital NFT public art installation tour in history, launching on Oct 2, 2021 in Toronto on a large LED wall of healing light and sound. Proceeds go to the Continuum Foundation, which supports the world tour that will follow.

Continuum by Toronto-based artist Krista Kim uses light and sound to create a meditative experience at the Fort York National Historic site, from Saturday, October 2 to Monday, October 4. The activation, which features a free-standing video wall measuring 120 meters long and 4 meters high will transform its host environments into spaces of meditation for all. Paired with immersive healing frequencies, Continuum will be the largest sound and light installation in history.

The sound, think experimental music of guitar drones, along with the sight, think mind-altering mood lighting, are meant to create a relaxed atmosphere to let go of one’s feelings and meditate the woes away. This may very well work for some, but for others it might be a bit too much of a stimulation for any sort of relaxation. To each their own. Hey, it’s free, it’s outdoors, it’s art, and two very interesting artists put a lot of time and effort into producing this, so grab a ticket and go!

For Krista, this project is a movement that shows that we can harness the power of digital technology to make our lives better. Krista is bringing her large-scale immersive video installations to various global events in this series to help promote mental health awareness through the healing power of art and technology.

CONTINUUM is a meditative generated animation by Krista Kim in collaboration with Efren Mur.  It will be featured in Toronto to bring healing and wellness to the community. In a symbolic act of healing and rebirth, the work will be installed at Fort York National Historic Site, transforming it from a military fortification implicated in colonial history into a light of hope for the future.

Krista Kim produced this large-scale artwork in a slow animation for a 20-minute sequence.  This piece was made in collaboration with Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder, who has composed healing frequency music in correlation with the energy of Krista Kim’s visuals.

Our society is experiencing digital overload; we have become addicted to our digital devices. Capturing moments on our Smart Phones and posting them on social media to earn “likes” has trumped the actual experience of life.  Social behaviour has become egocentric with more value being given to virtual popularity, than personal reflection.  As a community, we crave authenticity and self-awareness. But how can we overcome our digital overload?

Japanese Buddhist monks built Zen gardens over 1200 years ago to create a communal space that visually imparts a sense of meditativeness and mindfulness. In 2021, our communities need public art spaces that will do the same thing; spaces that allow people to decompress from the stresses of everyday life using the digital language of our times.

Free entry by registration. Guests can enjoy a meditation experience like nothing experienced before!

The in-person Continuum experience takes place outdoors for three days only, on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3 from 12 p.m./noon to 10 p.m., and on Monday, October 4 from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m./noon. Continuum is free to the public. Time-ticketed one hour visits must be booked in advance online.

Fort York Museum, 250 Fort York Blvd., Toronto

For those unable to attend in person, on Friday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m., Continuum will be live streamed and will be available to view after the event.
