I Love America is centered around the story of Lisa (Sophie Marceau), a single woman who decides to take a chance on love again at the age of 50, by catapulting her life from Paris to Los Angeles. Her children flew the coop and her famous, yet absent mother just passed, so Lisa needs a big change.

She reunites with her gay best friend Luka (Djanis Bouzyani), who found success in America with his iconic drag queen bar, but is struggling to find his own prince charming. Luka embarks on a mission to give Lisa a fresh start by creating a profile for her on a dating website. From awkward dates to a surprise encounter with John (Colin Woodell), Lisa will understand that the journey to love is a journey towards herself and forgiveness of her first love: her mother.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW

This is one of those “cute, feel-good” movies that everyone needs once in a while. The two main actors pull off good performances as besties looking for love. While Lisa has been out of the loop and is not into dating apps for finding true love, Luka is fully emerged in the dating apps, knowing all too well that they lead to nowhere beyond one night stands.

After Luka sets up and monitors Lisa’s profile for her, he sometimes will discreetly inquire about their openness to threesomes and bisexuality. After a few dates, Lisa gains an understanding of the one-night-stand, but when she meets John and thinks he’s just another hook up looking for a MILF, she is thrown off when he is actually into her and looking for something more substantial. Luka on the other hand actually meets someone IRL as opposed to online, and that connection also begins to flourish.

The film goes back and forth between French (with subtitles) and English, making it truly bilingual. It also alternates between present day and the past, with depictions of Lisa’s mother and their strained relationship. Lisa, now has two grown daughters of her own to contend with and doesn’t want to make the same mistake as her mother. Her mother does leave her a birthday gift by way of a note after her death, which ties things up nicely.
