UK popsters Placebo are currently touring North American for the first time in nearly a decade, and Toronto fans have a chance to catch them April 27, 2023 at History Toronto, with not-to-be-missed opening act Poppy Jean Crawford. 

Placebo released their latest LP Never Let Me Go back in March 2022 at which point they had originally planned to tour, but it was postponed until this year. The record peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 1 on the UK Indie Chart. Although it didn’t create much of a stir on this side of the Atlantic, the album has been lauded by loyal fans and critics alike who are anxious to see some of the songs performed live for the first time.

Placebo formed in 1994, with the London-based pair of Brian Molko (vocals/guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass/guitar), releasing their eponymous debut just two years later. In the intervening years, Placebo have released eight studio albums that have sold over 13 million copies, filled stadiums from Moscow to Sydney, won numerous awards including a 1999 Brit Award, and pushed the boundaries of gender and sexuality.

Poppy Jean Crawford is a singer, songwriter from Los Angeles, who grew up soaking in the city’s creative culture and music scene. Her artistic parents have had great influence on her as well. Her mother Casey Niccoli directed the music video “Been Caught Stealing” by Jane’s Addiction, and her father, Shannon Crawford, is a pop surrealist painter. She joined her first band, Crosseyed and Pantyless at 15, then later dropped out of high school and recorded her first EP, The Hallucinatory and Addictive 4 Week Love, in her bedroom. She recently released a title track single, The Takeover, from her forthcoming EP out this summer. It’s about love, power dynamics, and the chance for her to finally release a body of work she truly stands behind. Made in collaboration with producer James Dring (Blur, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey) The accompanying video was directed by her mother. Definitely one to watch and listen for in 2023 and beyond!
