The Dancing Djinn Cabaret features Arabic live music, drag, bellydance, and storytelling – March 11, 2026 (Toronto)
The Dancing Djinn is a groundbreaking theatrical and musical cabaret created by Lebanese-Canadian drag artists Nikotine and Samara. The show revives the legacy and opulence of queer Arab history, and draws on Sufi poetry, Andalusian music, and modern rock with a bellydancing twist. For one night only the stage will become a desert of memory and magic, spectacle rarely seen in Toronto.
The show follows Nikotine, an Arabesque enchantress, haunted by the voice of a bellydancing genie trapped in her magic lamp – Samara, the legendary queen of a the legendary Queerabia! This is a live singing show, hosted by Nikotine – Arabesque vocalist and storyteller – alongside Samara, internationally-acclaimed drag bellydancer. Both are Lebanese immigrants, however the show is performed in English.
Nikotine has been traveling through the desert for so long that she has forgotten where she comes from or where she was going. All she has is a magic lamp that whispers to her in the night. Rumor has it that a dangerous djinn lives inside: the spirit of Samara, ancient Queen of Queerabia. Inspired by ancient Andalusian queer Arabic poetry and Sufi mysticism, the show is rooted in storytelling, humor, and shadowplay.
Bilingual English-Arabic rock, piano ballads, and jazz cabaret are performed entirely live, with no lip-syncing, within a rich Arabesque visual world. Hand-beaded costumes complement the historic elegance of Arabian bellydance, storyline and history. The show is funny, alive, exciting and deeply moving.
Presented in an intimate cabaret format, the show unfolds in close proximity to the audience. Performers move between stage and room, following a theatrical through-line that transforms the evening into a shared experience. Audiences often describe the show as joyful, moving, and unexpectedly transformative.
Blending cabaret, musical theatre, and performance art, The Dancing Djinn Cabaret offers a rare live experience that celebrates storytelling, cultural exchange, and the razzledazzle of performance.
