SNAPSHOT REVIEW
Right from the start
“Thank you, Toronto! We’ve had our best days here, we’re back. Thank you all for being with us all these years, these 40 years. You have made us who we are. We are a fan-made band! You guys made us who we are and kept us going. Thank you so much!” —Kevin ‘ohGr’ Ogilvie, before starting Skinny Puppy‘s encore set tonight in Toronto.
Oscar winner Trent Reznor once described his first Nine Inch Nails single, “Down In It” as a “total rip-off” of Skinny Puppy’s “Dig It”. (One of the earliest versions of NIN toured with the group as the opening act in the late ’80s).
Skinny Puppy formed in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1982. Over the course of the career that saw it disband in 1996 and the reform in 2203, Skinny Puppy released 13 albums, with cEvin Key and Nivek Orge the group’s two longtime members. The group is widely considered to be one of the founders of the industrial rock and electro-industrial genres. Initially envisioned as an experimental side project by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) while he was in another classic 80s new wave band Images in Vogue, Skinny Puppy evolved into a full-time project with the addition of vocalist Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie).
The band is noted for theatrical and controversial live performances which blend performance art with music. Ogre once remarked that touring was, for himself, like “dating hydrogen peroxide“, referencing the numerous injuries which he would acquire over the course of touring.
Skinny Puppy – Wed Apr 26, 2023 – History Toronto – 1663 Queen Street East
