Lost Boys and Fairies – new BBC series details one gay couple’s journey to adopt a child
Lost Boys & Fairies is a glittering, moving and groundbreaking drama, set in Cardiff, exploring the universal theme of parents and children through the perspective of gay adoption.
Gabriel is a performance artist extraordinaire at spectacular queer club space Neverland. Together with his partner, Andy, he longs to take their relationship to the next level by adopting a child. We follow Gabe on a coming of middle-age journey as he faces his own childhood trauma so he can help Jake deal with his own. Fusing queer culture with powerful family drama, Lost Boys & Fairies is bold and heart-wrenching, filled to the brim with humor, redemption, and love.
The couple have been together for eight years and are eager to adopt a child. They begin the process of adoption with the assistance of their social worker, Jackie. Andy is excited about the prospect of becoming a father, while his partner Gabriel, a performance artist, is hesitant, not only due to his past issues with drug addiction but also because of his unhappy childhood, which was marked by his mother’s death at an early age and his father’s homophobia. Although the couple initially wanted to adopt a girl, they meet and begin to grow fond of Jake, a child placed in foster care after being removed from his violent father.
Although Season One only has three episodes, there’s enough of a hook to leave viewers wanting more. It’s a good mix of humour and drama, and definitely something new in the genre of gay portrayals on television.
Season 1 is now available in Canada on BritBox
